Alot of new users don't know how to properly format their text in mediawiki because you need to know wiki code. So mediawiki should integrate TinyMCE into the mediawiki software, so page edits can be done without users needing to know any html or wiki code. TinyMCE is opensource and is already integrated into Wordpress, joomla etc, so I think it's about time mediawiki integrated it. It works with IE,firefox, safari, chrome etc. I see no disadvantages with integrating TinyMCE into mediawiki. The mediawiki talk/discussion page on each article should also be changed to take advantage of TinyMCE's editing features by looking more like a forum with a layout like this: Name of Topic Replies Views Last Post mediawiki suggestion 31 108 by Jack by Thomas Mon Jan 12 2009 6.01pm Tue Jan 13 2009 8.14pm
There's already a TinyMCE extension for MediaWiki, albeit broken and incomplete - http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:TinyMCE_MW Changed component to extensions for now; I don't see this being built into MediaWiki core any time soon.
Wordpress even has an RSS reader that they insisted on gluing into their core, for the sole use of the administrator.
The new discussion page thing is a separate issue, and I think there are extensions that will already do something similar to that (DPLForum, Liquid Threads, etc.)
