Talking to active community member and the mentor, Ziko van Dijk, he says recommended reference style ends with a period.  So it wold be kind to insert a dot between reference tags so that users do not need to worry about the period at the end of each reference. i.e.<ref>.</ref>

INVALID? This is another thing that's specific to some communities and not others. Not sure we should be suggesting one syntax when other wikis might very well not use it.

Closed INVALID. This is a local style issue, not something that should be done globally. In any case, putting it in an empty <ref>.</ref> like that could be confusing, as there's nothing to indicate that it should be at the end (with an empty tag, its also in the beginning and the middle).
