When I search en.wikipedia for Tanelon, MediaWiki suggests Taelon as a correction. The user making this search could just as easily mean Tanelorn, as I did. Since no one guess as to what the user means will be reliably correct, the best course of action would be to suggest both.

The algorithm might not always guess what exactly you meant, but to keep the interface clean, we show only one most common (most linked to if an article) suggestion. To search for more similar words, you might want to use a query like: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=Tanelon~&fulltext=Search&ns0=1
Then why not have a link that would add the tilde, labeled "more suggestions" or something similar?
