URLs can end with a dot. Examples: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Terry+Lee+Brown+Jr. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drs. Adding such in blank text returns false URLs: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Subfader/Dot_URLs

WONTFIX. With bare links, we don't know whether it's a genuine punctuation mark in a sentence or a period as part of a link. I'm willing to be it's almost always the former. As noted in the linked page, using single bracket links does work, so a viable workaround exists for the (probably few) times you want to include the period in the link itself.
I note that most email clients have the exact same problems, for the exact same reason. And if it is good enough for them, I think it is good enough for us.
