Created attachment 7986 [details] Screenshot of Step 2/3, after cleaning up the cookies Hi! Sometimes I'm experiencing trouble when trying to login on Wikimedia projects (pt.wikibooks, en.wikipedia, at least). Steps: 1. I'm logged out. 2. I click on Special:Watchlist and get the "Not logged in" message. Ok. 3. I clear the cookies in Google Chrome (8.0.552.200 beta) 4. I log in and get the "Login sucessful" message. Ok. 5. I click on Special:Watchlist and get the "Not logged in" message again! (although now there are some cookies) I've tried to shift + reload the browser, it but it doesn't help. The problem also happens on Firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101206 Ubuntu/10.10 (maverick) Firefox/3.6.13). I just noticed It was also reported on English Wikipedia Village pump: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28technical%29#Can.27t_stay_logged_in_using_Google_Chrome

Some reports from dewiki too.
Marking it as "major". It's certainly not an "enhancement" and it's not quote "normal" either.
To me it also happens in he.wp and he.ws. It does not happen in Internet Explorer, but it does happen in Firefox and Chrome.
upping to high importance, looks fairly serious. i wouldn't call it normal either
You realise we ignore the priority? (or at least, don't use it for anything) I've found vanilla chrome isn't fine, incognito chrome is fine, and FF is fine...
No, I didn't :) I forgot to add a couple of things above, so I'll note them here. I'm getting this on Firefox 3.6.13, Opera 10.1.63, Konqueror (running on KDE 4.4.5) and a clean install of Chromium with no cache. All of these are on Mandriva 2010.2, KDE 4.4.5
<TimStarling> !log commented out the $wgCentralAuthCookieDomain = in CentralNotice.php Should be all fixed now... Seems to have fixed it for me!
Concur w/Reedy = was happening in Chrome late yesterday for me - no issues this evening.
Just had this bug occur in Firefox 4.0b9 (Win7), couldn't stay logged in even after clearing cache/cookies.

Link to log: http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/index.php?title=Server_admin_log&oldid=31377#January_14 It is still happening to me, both on Firefox and Chrome. There are also reports of the problem on Opera 11. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Can.27t_stay_logged_in_using_Google_Chrome

I just tried with Chrome on Windows Vista and didn't have the problem. Is anyone still seeing this?
(In reply to comment #14) > I just tried with Chrome on Windows Vista and didn't have the problem. Is > anyone still seeing this? Yes, I still have the problem. I tried to login on en.wikibooks using Google Chrome 8.0.552.200 beta and right after getting the message "Login sucessful", and going to b:Special:Watchlist, I was not logged in again. Sometimes the logout only happens after some minutes, when I change to another wikimedia project.

I have been trying to duplicate this with Google Chrome 8.0.552.237 (Official Build 70801) and not having any luck. Try upgrading?
I just went to English Wiktionary, using Google Chrome 8.0.552.237, and clicked on "Log in / create account"[1]. Then I checked "Remember my login status on this computer" and "logged in". Immediatelly after that, clicking on Special:Watchlist I got "Not logged in". [1]http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&returnto=Wiktionary:Main_Page
Updated problems: Using Firefox 3.16.3 & Vista: 1. I am logged out. 2. Clear browser cache 3. Navigate to en.wikipedia.org - not logged in 4. I log in (not "remember me") and get the "Login successful" message. 5. Click on Special:Watchlist and get the "Not logged in" message. - - -but - - - 1. I am logged out. 2. Clear browser cache 3. Navigate to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Special:UserLogin 4. I log in(not "remember me") and get the "Login successful" message. 5. Click on Special:Watchlist and remain logged in & every connection after that is still on the https/secure server (not just the login). - - - If - - - 1. I am logged out. 2. Clear browser cache 3. Navigate to en.wikipedia.org - not logged in 4. I log in (not "remember me" and get the "Login successful" message. 5. Click on Special:Watchlist and get the "Not logged in" message. In Google Chrome 8.0.552.237: 1. I am logged out. 2. Clear browser cache 3. I log in (not "remember me") and get the "Login successful" message. 4. I click on Special:Watchlist and remain logged in. In IE 8.0.16385: 1. I am logged out. 2. Clear browser cache 3. I log in (not "remember me") and get the "Login successful" message. 4. I click on Special:Watchlist and remain logged in. This is all on the same computer; so if it were just me I'd think it was browser specific. BUT, with all of the other reports and my prior experience, that gets thrown out the window. My 2 cents; hope it helps!
Thanks for checking on this. I'm using Firefox 3.6.13 on Vista, and using your steps, cannot reproduce.

(In reply to comment #16) > *** Bug 26819 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Per that bug, some of these problems may be caused by the live hack I put in to try to fix them in the first place. I have now taken that out.

I have now taken that out. Thank you, it worked ! The problem disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared. The situation is back to normal as far as my SUL bug is concerned.
Some user report it on zh.wikipedia on http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:%E4%BA%92%E5%8A%A9%E5%AE%A2%E6%A0%88/%E6%8A%80%E6%9C%AF#.E4.B8.80.E7.99.BB.E5.85.A5.E5.BE.8C.E6.8C.89.E3.80.8C.E5.8F.83.E6.95.B8.E8.A8.AD.E7.BD.AE.E3.80.8D.E5.B0.B1.E8.87.AA.E5.8B.95.E7.99.BB.E5.87.BA again. Reopen this bug for checking if anything goes wrong.
Pretty sure this is completely fixed.
I am suddenly having this problem - have been using Chrome for a long time with no problem at all. Suddenly this afternoon when I log into Wikipedia on Chrome the login does not hold - I am logged in, but when I go to the next page, any one, I am logged out. I cleared by browser history anc cache but it made no difference. Logging in on Firefox is fine. The bug is not fixed - but urgently needed to be. Thanks
(In reply to comment #25) > Pretty sure this is completely fixed. NO, it just started happening to me for the first time today. On Chrome, WIndows XP. No problem on Firefox except that I hate Firefox and want to go back to Chrome which always worked perfectly until today. At the same time that this Wiki log on bug started, my Gmail Notifier also went haywire (says server's certificate invalid) and when I log onto Facebook it does not hold the login between sessions when I check "keep me logged in". It does keep me logged in as long as I have that button unchecked - which makes no sense, and just started today. thanks for any help

Re-closing as fixed.
Thanks Roan - but I just checked 1nternet Explorer (IE 7,0,5730, 13IC ) and the exact same problem happened as is happening on Chrome - I log in manually, I am acknowledged as being logged in - see my user name up top, etc., and when I navigate to any other page I am logged out. This is not happening in Firefox but is happening in both Chrome and Explorer. Sorry I didn't tell you that last night - I never use IE so didn't think to check it. Please look into this again. Thanks
(In reply to comment #29) > Thanks Roan - but I just checked 1nternet Explorer (IE 7,0,5730, 13IC ) and > the exact same problem happened as is happening on Chrome Does it show the same problems with Facebook and Gmail?
There is no problem with gmail itself on any browser - the problem is with the Gmail Notifier for Windows (gives a popup when a new msg arrives even if you're not logged on) - instead of accessing my inbox, it gives an error message saying the server's certificate is invalid, As for Facebook, I can log on manually from all three browsers, but on Chrome and IE if I check the box "Keep me logged in", it does not let me log on, but if I uncheck that box, it keeps me logged in. Firefox not having that problem.

Firefox not having that problem. It does sound like the problem is not with Facebook or Wikipedia, but with your computer. I'm closing this bug INVALID. Please let someone else re-open it if they have the problem consistently on Wikipedia but not other sites.
OK, I found the problem - my computer's clock had changed the month to June instead of May - I don't know how - and this seems to be what confused log-ins to Wikipedia, Facebook and the Gmail notifier on Chrome and IE. No idea why it didn;t affect Firefox, but in any case it is solved and I'm sorry for bothering you guys, as it looked exactly the same as the above problem but was not. I'm posting this in case anyone else comes along and is tearing hair out over the same thing - check your clock. Thanks all.
