Description Quim Gil 2011-04-05 15:39:28 UTC
Hi, if you go to https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mobile-l it says "(The current archive is only available to the list members.)"

And indeed: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/private/mobile-l/

There is no reason to have this discussion list archive closed. Please open it to have it at the same level than foundation-l etc. Thanks!

There actually is a reason. This list was originally used for feedback on m.wikipedia.org, so it has a lot of stuff in the archive from non-Wikimedians who might not want their e-mails exposed to the entire Internet. This does not necessarily mean we shouldn't open up the archives, but there definitely isn't "no reason". :-)

Ok, we have a reason. Do we have a solution? :)

I joined recently and therefore I'm missing all the background. The current situation is:

- There is a list exclusively for feedback at https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mobile-feedback-l

- https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mobile-l says in the About: "A list for announcing and discussing work on the wikipedia mobile server and all of it's supported mobile platforms."

Note that there is also mobile@wikipedia.org - which sends a private email to a tracking system.

It may make sense to have the archives of the feedback list closed, but it only makes sense to have the archives of the discussion list open - like the rest of Wikimedia discussion lists.

If you agree on this, the potential solutions are:

- Just open the archives. It was never promised that the information sent would be confidential, and anyway whoever sends an email to the list gets it distributed to the rest of subscribers. The topic is not confidential either, does anybody recall a sensitive topic?

- Delete the past archives and start fresh with new, open archives. Sounds hackish but can be an option too. The list seems to have low traffic anyway.

- Hibernate/close mobile-l and create a new lista starting from scratch. Politically supercorrect, but really worth? How many subscribers would we lose in the move.

Who decides?

Hampton. :-) (Or Tomek, I guess.)

What do you two think?

After chatting with the list members we decided that its best to move all the old posts to a private space and then to open up the archives for the last month and on.

Done. New archives are open and any old archives have been moved to a private area.
Comment 8 Quim Gil 2011-11-01 19:16:21 UTC
Indeed, it works. Thank you very much. :)
