Description Tomasz Finc 2011-06-21 22:53:39 UTC
Some of our users are on really slow networks that can't really handle images on mobile very well. Lets add an option similar to our don't redirect mobile to disable images for both WAP and smartphone layout.

That's something the browser should offer, not the website.

I agree that this feature should be right within the browser as most people who make that change want it to apply it to every page that they visit across any domain. But, unfortunately a lot of the older browsers on feature phones on slow networks don't have this as an option. So were faced with users saying that they want an experience that is less network intensive but have no way to control it from their end. Or they simply don't understand how to make this change on their phone. If you have another suggestion on how to go about it then do let know but otherwise this seems like the best compromise.

"unfortunately a lot of the older browsers on feature phones on slow networks don't have this as an option"

That's not the website's fault. it would be nice, sure. But it's no reason to add such a useless feature. IMO it would be as useless as AAA+/- buttons on websites to enlarge the font size. That's what Ctrl + [+/-] is there for on browsers.

Disabling images is a browser feature, esp. on mobile devices.

WIkipedia may have users who are not so much into modern technology but those normally don't browse the web on a smart phone either.
