Description Gerard Boyers 2011-09-12 05:09:14 UTC
When checking an IP in CheckUser, the RDNS link is dead.

openrbl.org appears to be no longer operational.

There are many other RDNS and similar tools which should be used instead:

DomainTools offers RDNS amongst other information:
http://whois.domaintools.com/8.8.8.8

Also, Project Honeypot links to several other useful lookups: http://www.projecthoneypot.org/ip_8.8.8.8

DomainTools seems to want some sort of payment/is kind of sketchy though...

Really? I know it has pro accounts for the more advanced lookups, but a quick whois/rdns seems fine. I think most CheckUser users would realise this and not accidentally pay for pro.

I was just offering suggestions for the ones I use anyway. The current link goes to a parked page full of adverts, which is much more sketchy.

Patch for /extensions/CheckUser/CheckUser.i18n.php

I added a patch for /extensions/CheckUser/CheckUser.i18n.php.

I replaced Openrbl with DomainTools.

Until we find a better provider I updated it using the fix, it's still better to use it rather than having a completely broken tool there, althought I agree that we should find a provider who doesn't have so many ads + offer paid services for this

For future reference, the fix was applied in https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/111536 (r111536).
