Description Helder 2011-09-30 13:44:44 UTC
Currently the sidebar has a section with the following links:
----
*Communication
** IRC (#mediawiki) (pointing to [[mw:MediaWiki on IRC]])
** [[mw:Mailing lists]]
----

I think MediaWiki users could benefit from having a direct link to [[mw:Special:WebChat]], which is provided by [[mw:Extension:WebChat]] (used e.g. on [[translatewiki:Special:WebChat]]).

I was wondering if someone could install that extension on MediaWiki.org, and set:
----
$wgWebChatChannel = '#mediawiki';
----

Is there a need for this? Has the community asked for this? Users can just use the freenode webchat, http://webchat.freenode.net?channels=mediawiki, or they could use a real IRC client, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_Relay_Chat_clients.

The extension has not been reviewed for deployment and there are no plans to deploy it.

mybugs: If you want this deployed, you need to get consensus for it and it needs to go into the review queue.

Closing invalid for now.
