Description Srikanth Logic 2011-10-02 05:47:58 UTC
Much like how people sign off emails with different titles depending on context, Can we have different signatures be specified for a User and option to use them?

Like I may use ~~~~1 with name(talk)(Project1) and ~~~~2 with nickname(talk)(Project2)

I dont know if this is possible already with some templating, but putting in user preference will be useful

That's an ugly syntax. I think the preferred way would be that the user added a
signature button for each alternative signature.

You could have it expand to different things if at User_talk or Wikipedia: for
instance.

Too much preferences are bad. This is not something which will be added to
preferences.
The most UI I envision is that if we get that customize toolbar thing, it will
get an option for a button which adds a wikitext snippet.

With the rollout of Flow (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Flow) complex freeform signatures containing styling will be demphasized in many workflows, and comments signing will be automatic as it is a part of the reply and thread objects.

We would like to move toward a system where there is less ambiguity between the names by which users are known to each other, to reduce confusion, especially from new users not familiar with the practice of user names being completely different than a persons name in their signature.

That said, in the short term if a community member would like to create a gadget that allows for multiple signatures the Design group has no issues with this.
