Description Carlos 2011-10-25 09:16:11 UTC
The summary says it all. Special:Cite features the tag "citation", which works correctly.

The problem is, when we save MediaWiki:Cite_text, the tag gets escaped (or something) and then it appears as-is in Special:Cite.

See: http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Cite_text&action=history

The page was saved in 2005 and Special:Cite worked perfectly until I saved the page again on 2011-10-24.

I put severity "major" because it precludes users to get correct citations of Wikipedia pages.

Thanks.

From what I can see there is no HTML or MediaWiki extension <citation> tag, and as far as I know never has been.

What did this do previously that you expect it to do now, exactly?
Comment 2 Brion Vibber 2011-10-25 17:53:06 UTC
There does appear to _be_ a <citation> tag extension, but as far as I know it's never been used on Wikimedia sites. No sign of it in any configuration files. It also doesn't appear to be related to your usages here -- it seems to take some sort of magical parameter syntax with key=value pairs separated by || double pipes, whereas you seem to just be wrapping text which sounds like you were aiming for the HTML <cite> tag?
Comment 3 LordAndrew 2011-10-25 18:38:32 UTC
Looks like <cite> was indeed intended. But what I find odd is that only the current version of the page objects, printing the error message "Invalid tag extension name: citation". Previous versions show the tag as part of the page text, and Special:Cite strips out the invalid tag. The error message only appears on the current version of MediaWiki:Cite_text. Why is that happening?
Comment 4 Carlos 2011-10-25 18:43:43 UTC
Date and time templates inside Special:Cite ({{CURRENTDAY}} and family) refer to the cited page last modification time. But if you enclose them around "citation" tags, they refer to the actual current time (ie, time of last access).

Here is the help page: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite/Special:Cite.php#Variables

Anyway, I just checked and it seems to be working now. Thanks!
Comment 5 Carlos 2011-10-25 18:46:14 UTC
LordAndrew: The tag doesn't work on MediaWiki:Cite_text, but it does work on Special:Cite. That's not a problem (for us the users, at least). I think it always did the same.
Comment 6 Carlos 2011-10-26 21:39:38 UTC
Well, as I said, it was working, but it broke again when I saved this edition: http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Cite_text&diff=50850905&oldid=50774969

This bug has not been touched in at least six months. With this in mind, I've been asked by the bugmeister to bump this bug's priority down from "High". Concerns can be addressed to mah@everybody.org.

citation tags only works on Special:Cite, you will see there always in plain on MediaWiki:Cite_text, so WORKSFORME
