This risks overwriting user's clipboard unexpectedly.

Also the selected text may be used for other propose, such as searching for that text, or sending it via SMS etc.

That seems to just be the standard behavior; it acts the same in the default system Browser app (Nexus 1, stock Android 2.3.6)
