In the VisualEditor, double-clicking a word should highlight it, just as in the normal Wiki Editor, so you can then apply Bold, Italics, etc.  Right now double-clicking has no effect in IE8 on Windows 2008 Server.

We're not supporting Internet Explorer 8 in the Visual Editor. See:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Visual_editor/June_2012_release_FAQs#The_visual_editor_demo_doesn.E2.80.99t_work_for_me.
