Description とある白い猫 2012-01-29 13:48:09 UTC
Per https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Server-side_upload

I (User:とある白い猫) have a few files I'd like to upload that are well above (one is 246MB) the 100MB limit of commons.

Either the limit can be risen temporarily or I could DCC the file through IRC as I have no way to host files of this size.

Alternatively I can upload to a location you can email me with a method of your choice.

Again, why is an image 246MB? Or are the files not images? If they aren't, neither Commons nor Wikipedia is a personal file storage site.

I see 3 users at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalUsers/sysadmin

Tfinc (exists locally, system administrator)
Trevor Parscal (exists locally, system administrator)
Werdna (exists locally, system administrator)

So this request is more poised towards them.

The following 246MB file is the largest of the bulk.

to overwrite lower quality

They're very likely to be the ones to do it.

I've pulled a copy down onto our bastion host, but I'm not going to do this as I've no idea how our image scalers are going to re-act

I think it might make more sense to have both the smaller and the larger image, but I may be wrong

We always appreciate having the larger resolutions of images available on the site. For images over 100MB we usually coordinate a special upload; as of late these have fallen to Roan for whatever reason.

We do try to limit out-of-band uploads to 20GB or less in a day, so coordinating with him to see if other batch uploads are in progress would be a good idea.

Because it's possible that thumbnail creation might fail for the extremely large images (we have ulimits in place for memory), I would recommend keeping the previous size in place for now. Please do add a note on the description page for both the large and huge sizes pointing to the other image in the "other versions" section.

Reedy uploaded it. Thanks :)

A note the thumbnail does work and doesn't fail fortunately. :)
