We need some template magic, similar to {{urlencode}}, which will turn Wikimarkup in a parameter value into text. For instance for [[wibble]] it would return a value of "wibble" and for [[foo|bar]] it would return "bar"

This would allow the text value to be used, for example, as part of an external URL, when emitting COinS metadata: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COinS from templates.
