Tested with SMW 1.7.0.2 and Opera web browser. This:

{{#ask: ![[Some existing page]] | ? }}

will produce an error message, and everything below that line will then appear only in the error message balloon. It's probably a rare error, but since it wrecks the rest of the page, it is more important than it would be otherwise due to its potential use in wiki vandalism.

Can you link to a page that has this issue (and nothing else)?

Has been solved with SMW 1.8 which uses a different tooltip plug-in to avoid display clutter.
