Description Pete F 2012-02-24 02:41:24 UTC
Two issues, which I believe belong together (but happy to split if that is better):

1. When visiting a URL from a non-browser application (like mail), options appear for what app is to be used. On my phone, this includes the built-in browser, Firefox, or -- if it's a Wikipedia link -- a third-party app, Wikidroid. But the Wikipedia app is NOT included in the list -- it is apparently not listed as a helper app in a way that the OS recognizes.

2. If #1 is fixed, I think there is a good opportunity to do much better than Wikidroid and the other third-party apps: those apps fail on any URL that ends in: "/w/index.php?" In other words, any diff links, history tab, old revisions, etc. If the Wikipedia app could make sense of those URLs, it would be a great feature for sophisticated readers! Bonus points for being able to log in and view a watch list..but I won't hold my breath there!

I'm using Android (Gingerbread, perhaps?) on a HTC G2 phone from TMobile USA.

My mistake, I'm using version 1.03, not the beta.

Pete, try out our new beta which has #1 built in http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mobile-l/2012-February/005379.html . Eager to hear your thoughts on it.

Glad to hear it! I'm not super familiar with installing without <s>my crutch</s> the Android market, but I'll give it a whirl. Feel free to delete #1 and just make this about #2 -- or I could enter a new bug if that's easier.

New bug is best to keep things clean. All you have to do in order to install the app is to

1) Enable third party app installs in your system settings (Applications -> Unknown Sources on a Nexus S)
2) Follow our download link

Then just install like normal.

All installed, thanks! You're right, it wasn't that bad. Been hacking at it, bug reportin' about it, and tweetin' about it.

I have entered a new bug for the diff/history/old rev links: bug 34692

So no problem with this one remaining closed. Thanks!
