Description Dan Jacobson 2012-02-27 03:07:29 UTC
Let's say we are browsing a 'foreign site'. To make it less foreign, we
must append "uselang=en" after each url right there in the URL bar of
our browser.
http://dev.baidu.com/wiki/map/index.php?title=%E7%89%B9%E6%AE%8A:%E7%89%B9%E6%AE%8A%E9%A1%B5%E9%9D%A2&uselang=en

Go ahead and now click on one of the juicy links displayed.

Note how frustrating it is that we are now back in their native language.

After a while this becomes frustrating, and we wish MediaWiki had a
"uselang=en&remember_uselang=1" or some way to make the @#$! uselang
parameter stick.

Note there is no chance any such business sites would let a user login
to set a preference.

Compare all the effort put into providing translation strings, with this silly barrier to seeing them.

This (remembering uselang) would be an awesome bit, imo. Siebrand, Niklas, what do you think?
Comment 2 Mark A. Hershberger 2012-02-27 18:09:19 UTC
After asking Niklas about this, he points out that they could install the LanguageSelector https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:LanguageSelector
Comment 3 Dan Jacobson 2012-02-28 00:04:38 UTC
The WHOLE POINT of my bug is that THEY aren't going to be installing anything.

THEY are mostly static read-only documentation sites of various companies.

The hope is that when one encounters one, one can navigate easily from minute one without needing to contact them to find somebody to fix something.

However as the bug is now closed, one must probably go in the 'greasemonkey' direction as is the usual case for such few remaining hostile software.
