Hey :) In bug 34338 the mailing list wikidata at https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata was deleted in favor of wikidata-l. It seems the list is back for some reason. Could you please look into that? It's unfortunately causing confusion for people. Thank you!
There don't appear to be any messages to the old list since 25 February, at least not in the archive. Is the old list still operational?
You mean if wikidata is still operational? No. It was deprecated in favor of wikidata-l and is no longer in use. It should be deleted (like it has already been before it became a zombie ;-)).
Ok, I was just confirming that it was a regression. Marking confirmed.
Actually, I have found that, according to the mailing list guru Casey Brown, there is no way to "close" a list: There's no way to "close" a mailman list. Instead, I would suggest that you unsubscribe everyone from the mailing list, make it so that new people can't subscribe, hide the list from the list of lists page, and add a note to the "list description" in [all appropriate languages] that says the list is closed (and pointing them to the other MediaWiki lists). So simply place conspicuous warnings and remind people of the correct list.
That's pretty much what we did, with the exception of also enabling "emergency" moderation so that mail didn't get out.
We can delete a list either with or without removing archives, if you want to.
