I'm sporadically seeing

but i cant reliably reproduce it. If we had stats then we could analyze this much better.

Yesterday we had a spree of 5xx errors due to packet loss between esams and eqiad:
2013-11-11  0.56 < Ryan_Lane> varnish sucks and is highly susceptible to packet loss

I wonder if the problems you see are/were due to packet loss too.
