Till 10th of May, the # of articles were being shown on the Wiktionary main page (http://te.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E0%B0%AE%E0%B1%8A%E0%B0%A6%E0%B0%9F%E0%B0%BF_%E0%B0%AA%E0%B1%87%E0%B0%9C%E0%B1%80) which uses the specified macro {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} was around 48000. On 11th May, it was noticed that the number changed to 23,146 articles.
The English pages in Telugu wiktionary are shown as 27,582 and total articles as 23,337, which is logically can't be correct. Probably there is separation of these two main pages in the area of addition; which must be more than 50,100 by now. Kindly look into the problem in the corresponding programming area. Thank you.~~~~

http://stats.wikimedia.org/wiktionary/EN/TablesWikipediaTE.htm as per Dec 2012, shows a count of 68 k, while the http://te.wiktionary.org/wiki/మొదటి_పేజీ shows a much smaller number. This difference happened suddenly on May 11, 2011 as per comment 2. Hope this helps,
As per https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Using_custom_namespaces#Content_namespaces , the count only includes the pages which have atleast one internal link to other pages. As I understand lot of new articles do not have that, the discrepancy has arisen. As the wiktionarians can now address the issue, the bug may please be resolved as Not a problem.
