Load the lead section and references first, then load the other sections in the background or on demand. This will decrease time-to-usable-information-on-screen considerably.

Wouldn't this also avoid loading, say, images until they're needed?  Sounds like a real winner.

Images are already not loaded until needed :) 

https://github.com/wikimedia/WikipediaMobile/pull/262 implements this :)
