Description varnent 2012-06-23 22:01:18 UTC
It came up in conversation with Drenfro‏‎ and Sumanah that some developers would like an announcement list with more information than mediawiki-a but less traffic than wikitech-l. This list will be used for developer announcements, such as events, trainings, sprints, changes like Git, etc. It will be moderated and announcement based (so no discussions).

Email addresses for admins:
gregory<dot>varnum<at>gmail<dot>com
sumanah<at>wikimedia<dot>org (it seems wise to have a staffer on this one)

Requested list address:
wikitech-a@lists.wikimedia.org

Assigning to myself.

List has been created as wikitech-announce@lists.wikimedia.org as per my IRC discussion to keep with the standard -announce suffix. I've sent an email to Varnent and Sumana with the admin password. Any issues, just let me know.

I'm slightly confused what the point of this list is and I'm worried we're creating far too many.

A separate announce list from mediawiki-a seems highly superflous perhaps we just need to reconsider what is being sent from the original announce list. More lists does not always equal better.

James: that was discussed in IRC (and was actually my first reaction to the request) - but there was a lot of resistance to doing anything more than strictly release announcements on mediawiki-a.

Some other ideas like heavier promotion of the tech blog and a tech specific newsletter were discussed - but the developers in IRC requesting this (mostly loosely engaged developers) this generally preferred email.

I can respect that folks don't have the time or inbox space to keep up with wikitech-l, but also want to know more about the growing Wikimedia developer community than mediawiki-a allows for.

I don't think this is yet another list developers will need to subscribe to as they may come up on wikitech-l, but it will be a good home for folks currently on mediawiki-a wanting more info or wanting to get off the wikitech-l list.

Has this list been added to Gmane already?
