Translated and deployed mediawiki messages are appearing in English

Although almost all mediawiki messages are translated and deployed in ml.wikipedia, interface randomly appearing in English.

To reproduce:
Go to some user talk page (eg:http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Anoopan)
Click heart icon to open Wiki Love interface
Check barnstars (issue most easily identifiable part) whether it is in English or Malayalam.

If it is in Malayalam click some other options like Food and beverages (Actual text is Malayalam) or Kitten for you. Go back to barnstars section. They will appear in English if not in Malayalam. ;-)

If it is still in Malayalam, try again as said above. At some point it will appear in English.

(In barnstars sections all but one barnstars are translated and deployed in ml.wp)

Affects me too
Comment 2 Sam Reed (reedy) 2012-06-25 16:55:19 UTC
Is it any better now?
Comment 3 praveenp 2012-06-25 17:11:32 UTC
No. I am still getting English. It looks like, the bug became more consistent - I get English in every second click on Barnstars button. But not sure.

It looks like most of the config messages at http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%AE%E0%B5%80%E0%B4%A1%E0%B4%BF%E0%B4%AF%E0%B4%B5%E0%B4%BF%E0%B4%95%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%95%E0%B4%BF:WikiLove.js had never been translated from English. Since ml.wiki wasn't actually doing any custom configuration of WikiLove (just copying what was on en.wiki), I just deleted all the custom config code. Since it's deleted now, WikiLove falls back to the defaults, which are almost all translated into Malayalam in the i18n file. There are still a few missing, but these can be fixed in translatewiki or overridden through selective customization on the WikiLove.js file. Just me know if you have any questions about this, but it should be fixed for the most part.
Comment 5 Ryan Kaldari 2012-06-25 18:48:51 UTC
Note that you'll need to clear your browser cache to get the new JS.

Why does it show untranslated pieces? If there's no translation for it (either title or description), a barnstar/food/whatever shouldn't be shown at all, the behavior is confusing for translators and wiki sysops attempting to remove some parts of WikiLove from their wiki (as shown also by this bug report).
Comment 7 praveenp 2012-06-26 13:40:58 UTC
I had no idea there exists a local js for wikilove. That is my mistake. :-) But I wonder why it showed complete translation atleast once in each try.
Comment 8 Ryan Kaldari 2012-07-07 23:48:42 UTC
Nemo_bis: WikiLove shows whatever pieces it is configured to show. I don't think this is confusing. Any admin on ml.wikipedia.org can configure WikiLove to exclude or add any items they want on that wiki. If it is configured to show cookies, but the cookie description isn't translated into Malayalam, there are 4 ways to fix this (none of which require the WMF):
1. Add a translated description through translatewiki
2. Add a translated description through MediaWiki:WikiLove.js
3. Add a translated description through MediaWiki:Wikilove-food-cookie-desc
4. Remove the cookies item entirely through MediaWiki:WikiLove.js
All of this localization work was supposed to have been done by the ml community before WikiLove was enabled on that wiki. I'm not sure how it got enabled if that work wasn't completed. Perhaps we should turn off WikiLove on ml.wiki until this issue is resolved.

Instructions on how to do WikiLove configuration can be found at: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikiLove#Custom_configuration

Here are the currently untranslated WikiLove messages for Malayalam:

http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&group=ext-wikilove&language=ml

There are currently 30 that are untranslated. Can someone who speaks Malayalam go to that URL and translate the messages? I'm going to reopen this bug in the meantime.
Comment 10 praveenp 2012-07-08 02:09:54 UTC
Alien food items ([[Bug 35351]] ;-)) + random acts of Kindness barnstar creates 30 untranslated messages. I don't understand what is random acts of Kindness barnstar, and no other Malayalam wikimedian is able to explain that to me. So all those untranslated messages are not translatable (at-least to me).

IMO a nice interface for customizing wikilove at wiki level (without writing JavaScript) would be useful in every wiki.
Comment 11 Ryan Kaldari 2012-07-08 03:21:19 UTC
Yes, that would be very useful, but I don't have a spare month to create such an interface. I'll go ahead and remove all of those items from ml.wiki. I would also encourage you guys to add some native food or awards. If you can give me an example of a native food item, I'll create it for you. It's really not too hard.
Comment 12 Ryan Kaldari 2012-07-08 03:58:54 UTC
There you go. Now you have no alien food. Here's the code that removes them:
http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%AE%E0%B5%80%E0%B4%A1%E0%B4%BF%E0%B4%AF%E0%B4%B5%E0%B4%BF%E0%B4%95%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%95%E0%B4%BF:WikiLove.js
See, it's not too complicated :)

I'm not sure why you can't translate strawberries. It has an article in ml.wiki, and there's even a featured picture of a strawberry on ml.wiki:
http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%AA%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%B0%E0%B4%AE%E0%B4%BE%E0%B4%A3%E0%B4%82:%E0%B4%B8%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%9F%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%B0%E0%B5%8B%E0%B4%AC%E0%B5%86%E0%B4%B1%E0%B4%BF.JPG
http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%97%E0%B4%BE%E0%B5%BC%E0%B4%A1%E0%B5%BB_%E0%B4%B8%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%9F%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%B0%E0%B5%8B%E0%B4%AC%E0%B5%86%E0%B4%B1%E0%B4%BF

FWIW, the food in WikiLove is all internationally popular food, and it's from all different parts of the world. Bubble tea is from Asia. Stroopwaffles are from the Netherlands. Baklava is from the Middle East. Surly people in India sometimes eat foreign food or travel to other countries, right? Anyway, like I said, it's easy to add new food items, so just let me know if you have any ideas!

Yes that is very simple.

Could you add this to Food section of Wiki Love, as an example

Food Item Name:

Comment 14 Ryan Kaldari 2012-07-08 18:56:44 UTC
No problem. I just need a header message to go with the new item. Something like:
A കിണ്ണത്തപ്പം for you!
...or...
A gift of കിണ്ണത്തപ്പം!
I can't read Malayalam, but maybe...
താങ്കൾക്ക് ഒരു കിണ്ണത്തപ്പം!
(judging by the other Malayalam headers.) What does that say?

Does that food have any name in English? Maybe I could add it to the default configs at some point. It looks tasty whatever it is :)
Comment 15 praveenp 2012-07-09 09:36:33 UTC
Just found English wp page: [[Kinnathappam]]!

"താങ്കൾക്ക് ഒരു കിണ്ണത്തപ്പം" will work; which means "A Kinnathappam (granted) for you".
Kinnathappam is a food item, so more native translation may be "ഒരു കിണ്ണത്തപ്പം കഴിക്കൂ"; which means "Have a kinnathappam".
