Description Chris Maloney 2012-08-13 01:42:00 UTC
On English wikipedia, I have had a nagging feeling that I haven't been getting all my email notifications, and I just confirmed it. Perhaps it has to do with namespaces, but I am sure that I am not getting email notifications to, for example, Template:Infobox disease, even though it has been on my watchlist for a long time.

I don't see how you can make this "minor". It is very important that email notification feature works; otherwise, communication between collaborators is impossible. Thanks for your attention to this bug.

Chris, Sumurai8: Has this happened recently?
If so, a specific time frame would be helpful so somebody could check Wikimedia server logs whether mail has been successfully sent.
Comment 5 Chris Maloney 2012-11-06 21:55:06 UTC
Not that I know of. Maybe it has gone away.

But the thing about a bug like this is, of course, I wouldn't have any way of knowing I wasn't getting notifications. I think the real way to address this bug would be to make sure you thoroughly test this feature, including testing error modes. That is, look in the code -- if email fails for some reason, is it getting logged somewhere? Are those logs being checked systematically to make sure there aren't problems? That kind of thing.

Again, I'd say, it's a really important feature that people rely on, and when it fails, it often fails silently such that no one ever knows, so I think it's worth some extra effort to ensure robustness. On the other hand, I can't say that I've noticed the problem lately.

Actually you do: check your watchlist.
I suppose it's not too big, if you have email notifications enabled for watchlist, so you only have to count how many edits there were.
There are many settings to remember and check, but we can't do it for you.
Check the docs (which I'll update now):

Okay, I can't say that it has happened recently. Probably the problem has gone away.

Ok. When you suspect something, please check your preferences and the kind of edit in question (before it disappears from recent changes) and reopen the bug.
Thank you very much.
