Description Tomasz W. Kozlowski 2012-08-19 13:30:30 UTC
As the Chapters Committee is going to be renamed to "Affiliations Committee" in a few weeks' time (see also bug 39482), it would be lovely to have the mailing list use a new name and a new address.

The suggested change would be from the current "chaptercommittee-l" to "affiliationscommittee-l", with the archives moved to the new address (just like in the case with Foundation-l being moved to Wikimedia-l).

We would also appreciate having the old address redirect to the new one to avoid linkrot; also, as the new address will be quite a long one, it'd be great to have an alias "affcom-l@lists.wikimedia.org" to simplify the matters for outside users.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Tomasz,

The new mailing list standardisation means that we are dropping the -l suffix on all lists: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Standardization#Naming_scheme.

Therefore, the new mailing list would be affiliationscommittee@lists.wikimedia.org.

However, if you look at this part of the standardisation, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Standardization#Committees, shortening the name to just affcom@ might be something to consider, as we have langcom@ instead of languagescommittee@, spcom@ instead of sisterprojectscommittee@ etc - it just keeps things simple.

What are your thoughts?

Hi THO,
thanks for such a prompt reply, and excuse my ignorance in terms of mailing list names :-)

From my perspective, it would be even better to have the address shortened to "affcom@lists.wikimedia.org"; in this case, I would just like to keep the old address as an alias, because it's virtually everywhere and it'd be better for people not to receive bounces from the mail servers when they use it.

Thanks!

Not a problem, you managed to work Bugzilla, you're not that ignorant. ;-)

Sure, I'm assigning this bug to Daniel as he's the one that knows how to and is able to do the renames. We'll create a web alias too so that if anyone navigates to /listinfo/chaptercommittee-l on Mailman, they'll be redirected to /listinfo/affcom.

Done. The list has been renamed. I have sent a message to the list itself with details. The related gerrit change is here:
