I have two different types of error here: one photo is a gray square and one shows a spinner forever.

I believe the one with the gray square had a delay during upload, so I cancelled it and tried again, and it seemed to complete the upload.

Also, it seems the photos are forever lost, but that is another bug.

This is very unclear. Please let us know the screen you are seeing this problem and the monument associated with it.
