This is another terminology problem found while writing docs and [[mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Glossary]], but without clear solution. A template is usually something different. The etherpad lists the few alternatives we came up with: layout, grid, model.
layout: +1 (matches closely, but can also mean other things) grid: -1 (it's not) model: -1 (model means something else in programming) schema: -1 (pretty far fetched) mold: +1 (like template, but no confusion with templates)
"grid" was a reverse semantical calque from Italian "griglia" (which would be appropriate). mold/mould is pretty and, even if not super-common, it's not technical jargon so it should be rather easy to translate I think? If it's understandable for everyone, could be a good choice.
Template is perfectly fine. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/template
