Some languages are capitalized and others are not (e.g., "español" vs. "English") in the list of languages. The capitalized version ("Español") would be preferred.
from langdb.yaml es: [Latn, [EU, AM, AF, WW], español] it: [Latn, [EU], italiano] I guess it is with lower case in CLDR, but Amir can confirm this.

Those can be uppercased programmatically when appropriate.
We've had this discussion a few times on MediaWiki core. Autonyms have their form. That may be a capital, a Hani character or a Devanagari character. Forcefully capitalising Latin script autonyms make them incorrect. This should be WONTFIX.
