Description spage 2012-09-24 00:22:08 UTC
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Edit_toolbar dedicates a section to "an alternative toolbar" which links to Special:PrefSwitch.

But https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PrefSwitch presents an undated uneditable zombie special page that is bug-laden:
* links to a dead wiki
* presents an obsolete survey (no Firefox 4)
* doesn't seem to actually change any preference
* seems obsoleted by Preferences > Editing > Beta features> Enable enhanced editing toolbar
* its thank you page says "You may always turn [new features] back on by clicking on the "_New features_" link at the top of the page. " but there's no such text on pages and the link goes to the 404 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:PrefSwitch&from=&fromquery=

I think there's no reason Special:PrefSwitch should still exist.
There's already a bug 37364 to remove the extension PrefSwitch, but it's blocked by SimpleSurvey's dependency on it, which means AFT depends on it (bug 29858). Before someone gets around to removing the entire extension maybe simply removing the line $wgSpecialPages['PrefSwitch'] will get rid of the special page.

If I'm correct then in the meantime any links to Special:PrefSwitch need to be rewritten (but you can't do "What links here" for a page in the Special: namespace).

As far as I know Usability Initiative is no longer maintained (says bug 36111), so not sure what to do with this ticket. If it's about being still live, "Wikimedia/Site configuration" might be a better place?

Should link to http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:PrefSwitch instead maybe?

spage: As this seems to not exist anymore, can this ticket be closed?

I rewrote
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Edit_toolbar#WikiEditor_alternative_toolbar to remove the link.
