Description Arthur Richards 2012-10-02 00:21:30 UTC
There are a bunch of subdomains for wikimedia.org that do not have associated .m domains (eg uk.wikimedia.org). The redirector is currently attempting to redirect *.wikimedia.org (except office) to .m domains, which is causing problems.

Related to bug #38617

www.wikipedia.org as well. On mobile:

wikipedia.org -> www.wikipedia.org -> www.m.wikipedia.org

I cannot reproduce an automatic redirect from wikipedia.org to www.m.wikipedia.org on my Android device. Or are you saying that www.wikipedia.org *should* redirect to www.m.wikipedia.org?

I can on my iPod touch, just did it a moment ago.

No, I'm saying we need mobile versions of the www portals:
* www.wikipedia.org
* www.wiktionary.org

etc. which can be on m.(domain).org, or www.m.(domain).org, or they can simply be done with CSS on the same HTML page (which we do now for Wikipedia). However in that case we need to make sure to exclude "www" and (no subdomain) from the redirector.

Right now we're redirecting to inexistent pages like http://www.m.wikipedia.org/

No, it's not a dupe: this bug is about bogus redirection while 38799 is about DNS setup. Redirection issues were fixed with https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/29883/
