Description Lane Rasberry 2012-10-09 13:57:56 UTC
The usual upload limit on Commons is 100mb. There is an experimental setting which allows larger uploads.
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Chunked_uploads>
I uploaded a file under 100mb. I wanted to replace it with a larger version of the same file. Some setting disallows me to replace any file with a larger version over 100mb.

However, I am allowed to upload a completely new file over 100mb. This is problematic because files ought to be uploaded in the same history.
Comment 1 Sam Reed (reedy) 2012-10-09 14:27:09 UTC
Is this actually Commons specific? Or is it actually (more likely, I guess) a problem with MediaWiki rather than the Wikimedia infrastructure
Comment 2 Lane Rasberry 2012-10-09 14:38:48 UTC
The problem is manifesting in Commons as the place most likely to get uploads greater than 100mb and as the only place, I think, which has an experimental setting for allowing uploads greater than 100mb.

But more likely, this is a problem with MediaWiki.

Today Rillke published a pre-alpha JavaScript which allows the wanted feature. You could have a look at the german village pump [1], if interested.

Changing component to upload wizard. I've seen files on commons be re-uploaded with chunked, so I don't think its a backend issue.

Its also possible this may have been fixed in the mean time.

Lane: Do you know if that is still a problem?
When you try to overwrite/replace a file, what is the actual behavior? Is there any error specific message (please paste it here)?
