Description Tilman Bayer 2012-10-17 20:48:58 UTC
Sending out a translation notification on Meta resulted in a "Wikimedia Foundation error" page, with the following message:

Request: POST http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:NotifyTranslators, from 208.80.154.9 via cp1007.eqiad.wmnet (squid/2.7.STABLE9) to 10.64.0.142 (10.64.0.142)
Error: ERR_READ_TIMEOUT, errno [No Error] at Sun, 14 Oct 2012 07:48:30 GMT

The requested notifications appear to have been sent out alright though. The translation notifications log entry read as follows:

07:49, 14 October 2012 Tbayer (WMF) (talk | contribs | block) sent a notification about translating page FDC portal/Proposals/CentralNotice2012; languages: all languages; deadline: 2012-10-15; priority: high; sent to 1063 recipients, failed for 0 recipients, skipped for 310 recipients

Tilman: Does this still happen?

Maybe Seddon can tell us, they're the two translation admins sending most notifications (it's not advisable to run some just for the sake of testing).
Comment 3 Joseph Seddon 2012-12-07 15:04:07 UTC
I havn't noticed this happening personally

I think it happened to me only once more after I filed the bug. I will try to report each new occurrence here from now on. As Nemo points out, it can't really be tested systematically.
Comment 5 Nemo 2013-02-03 23:36:07 UTC
09:03, 29 January 2013 Tbayer (WMF) (talk | contribs | block) sent a notification about translating page Wikimedia Highlights, December 2012; languages: all languages; deadline: none; priority: medium; sent to 1233 recipients, failed for 0 recipients, skipped for 184 recipients

And so on, at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=notifytranslators>

If such massive notifications work, I think we can now call this fixed. Please reopen if it happens again.

After having seen no more problems of this sort since at least the beginning of this year, I encountered a similar timeout issue with a translation notification recently. Filed it as a separate bug (for the Translate extension) since it seems to be connected with timeouts when marking pages for translation: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53769

Now separated out as https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55397 after it happened once more.
