Description Benoît Evellin 2012-11-03 19:36:30 UTC
A personal tool can be added by a JavaScript hack, like the Sandbox link on English Wikipedia.

During a small consultation on French Wikipedia's village pump in order to deploy the same link, this hack has been rejected because of the js, but not the idea of adding links (see : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Le_Bistro/27_mai_2012#Petit_sondage_dominical).

Is it possible to add links on the personal toolbar, without a js hack ?

Gadget? But it's still somewhat of a hack..

That's the point. I want to discover if there is others possibilities than (again) a hack or something like that.

Adding a link, for example, in the harsh will be more appreciated.

* How is using mw.util.addPortletLink (an API designed specifically for this purpose) a hack?

* What does "in the harsh" mean?

* What would be an acceptable solution for you / What is there not acceptable about the method used on English Wikipedia?

Hey, I'm just the spokesman :-)

As reported above, the global reticence on French Wikipedia is (I quote the village pump) "JavaScript is okay for prototyping, not for a global deployment".

I think (personal interpretation) they would prefer a direct link, like "preferences" ou "user page" links. Many Wikipedias are going do deploy this Sandbox link : is it possible to have the link as a default feature ?

Thanks
