Changed title to reflect the language of the Wikipedia this is requested for.
Comment 2 Snowolf 2012-11-10 07:50:43 UTC
Also, I think we'd need some kind of community discussion for this.

Please describe correctly licensing information on each uploaded picture.

http://xal.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%91%D0%BE%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%B3:Wikipedia-xal-logo-byTsebeen.png doesn't contain any license data.

For a sample of appropriated copyright information for Wikimedia logos:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Copyright_by_Wikimedia

Then, there are some best practices for Wikipedia logos. Here the issues I noted with your version:

(1) A SVG version is prefered than a PNG one, so it's possible to print it in high resolution. See http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/About_the_official_Marks)

(2) The text uses Libertine font. This font supports Cyrillic characters. See http://www.linuxlibertine.org/fileadmin/user_upload/PDF/Multilingual.pdf - could you confirm this font is used?

(3) I would like to remember Wikipedia versions are linguistic versions. The Kalmyk Wikipedia uses Cyrillic alphabet, so I would like to see somewhere a strong rationale be added to explain why the right characters in another alphabet are used in complement and I wonder if a wider community approval on meta. wouldn't be required for such linguistic principle exception.

(4) Proportions (ie the font size) and layout (ie the relative position of the text and the globe) should be similar to other Wikipedia logos.
Comment 5 Dereckson 2012-11-10 08:19:23 UTC
Complement about the (3). The other alphabet is in clear script.

This is a variation of the Classical Mongolian script, and it's still used in China according http://www.omniglot.com/writing/kalmyk.htm

Still, we've a divergence between logo alphabet and project alphabet.
Comment 6 Yaroslav Blanter 2012-11-10 20:54:44 UTC
The user who submitted the bug is a vandal banned from Russian Wikipedia, and on his way to be banned from English Wikipedia. Please disregard his request. He does not speak Kalmyk, he does not understand the old Mongolian script, and the Kalmyk is not written in Old Mongolian script anyway (and has never been).
Comment 7 Dereckson 2012-11-10 21:20:00 UTC
Yaroslav > according several sources, Kalmyk living in China uses an alphabet called "clear script", derived from the old Mongolial script. You'll find some information on http://www.omniglot.com/writing/kalmyk.htm

Михаил > please clarify your intent - are you going to launch a discussion on xal. to get a local consensus and fix the logo or could we close this bug as "resolved - won't fix"?
Comment 8 Yaroslav Blanter 2012-11-11 09:55:41 UTC
I now checked that the image was originally uploaded by the Kalmyk Wikipedia admin, so it should be fine. I was just afraid that this is one more hoax from Mikhail Gubin. The local discussion was actually open, but I am the only active participant of Kalmyk Wikipedia, so most likely it will end where it is now.
Comment 10 Andre Klapper 2013-01-01 12:07:23 UTC
Yaroslav: So is there some kind of village pump or place to discuss this with the community (if existing)? A link would be welcome.

Dereckson, this is incorrect. PNG version is preferred, because rsvg doesn't convert SVG to PNG at best.

However, it's true that the proposed PNG is not acceptable. Михаил, please follow the instructions at https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/Word_mark_creation , upload the logo at [[xal:File:Wiki.png]], get it protected by a local sysop (which will also ensure compliance to local community's will) and file a new bug asking to set
    'xalwikipedia'       => '$stdlogo',

Closing this report, it's not actionable and too confusing.
Comment 12 Nemo 2013-01-01 12:27:39 UTC
ehm 'xalwiki' of course
Comment 13 Yaroslav Blanter 2013-01-01 12:40:33 UTC
The village pump is here: http://xal.wikipedia.org/wiki/Меткән:Нүр халх . The topic on the logo is #Логотип .

I beg to differ: if we prefer to use a PNG for the *configuration* as *format*, this PNG should be prepared from a vectorial logo, this one usable for any other use, like, as I pointed in the comment 4, 300 dpi publishing purposes.

This is what the guide I linked tells to do, but not what you previously said.
