Some projects get their wiki spammed by some bots doing automatic user creation, e.g. http://wiki.openoffice.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&from=20121030130132 but there were concerns that measures to restrict user creation would hinder cooperation (http://markmail.org/message/cgxqgprnyghrhmqn). If it was possible to hide the signups in the RecentChanges page then all would be fine if the many fake signups do not result in scalability problems. Adding a parameter like "hideusercreation" to the others mentioned in http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Recent_changes would help to do that.
On a second thought user creation entries are probably not too interesting for users but for admins, so showing these entries should be disabled by default. I adjusted the issue summary accordingly.
I’ve written an extension recently for exactly this purpose: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RecentChangesLogFilter
