Description Mark Holmquist 2012-11-13 17:12:30 UTC
For a reason unknown to me, I'm getting French as the language for the central notice on enwiki and mediawiki.org. I probably had French as my language at one point or another, so this isn't *totally* off base, but my language preference on mediawiki.org is currently English, so I'm not sure why it's giving me French.

Clearly this is bad--talking to someone in anything but their native language can't be a good idea. I'd love to help bug-hunt if needed.
Comment 1 Mark Holmquist 2012-11-13 17:28:15 UTC
Update, I've tried switching to French and back, but no change. Also, adding ?uselang=en to the URI doesn't change things, so somebody isn't using the interface language on the backend.
Comment 2 Mark Holmquist 2012-11-13 17:30:27 UTC
Corollary: CiviCRM doesn't have any way to switch languages, so once this happens, I'm stuck with French. Since I know enough French to fumble my way through an interface that I wrote, but not nearly enough to understand instructions for credit card transactions, this means that I'm unable to donate. So we should maybe have the Universal Language Selector (or something) running on our CiviCRM instance, too.

I'm not sure what you mean about civi. Donors don't hit civicrm at all in the donation-making process. It goes CN Banner -> Donate wiki -> payments. All mediawiki. Civi only sends out Thank You emails at this point.

Are you just seeing this for the CN UI? IE: all the rest of MW is in English? If you click on the allocations tab is it still in french? (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:BannerAllocation)
Comment 5 Matt Walker 2012-11-13 17:42:10 UTC
Also; I presume you're logged in whilst this is happening?
Comment 6 Matt Walker 2012-11-13 17:54:31 UTC
... actually; are you seeing this just for banners? Because right now WMFR is running a banner that has hardcoded French language text in it. If that's the case -- you're probably in a location that's geolocating to France or a French territory. Confirm by going to http://bits.wikimedia.org/geoiplookup
Comment 7 Mark Holmquist 2012-11-13 18:10:11 UTC
OK, sorry, I saw "civicrm" in a URL somewhere and assumed it was telling the truth :) whatever interface we get when we click on "donate" or "support" or whatever it's supposed to be in English.

Sadly I'm at the office now, and donation pleas seem to be disabled for our IP.

mwalker, http://bits.wikimedia.org/geoiplookup gives me the following JSON:

Geo = {"city":"San Francisco","country":"US","lat":"37.748402","lon":"-122.415604","IP":"173.228.85.200","netmask":"24"}

(I of course ran it from the original IP that I was using)

And yes, I'm logged in, and I'm not sure about the allocations tab, because I see it in English now, but I also don't see the donation plea. The rest of MW is all in English, though.

FYI, this seems to be fixed on enwiki but not on mw.org.
Comment 9 Peter Gehres 2012-11-28 16:22:03 UTC
So, here's the fun part, there are currently no banners targeted at any project other than wikipedia. Can you take a screenshot of what you see?
Comment 10 Andre Klapper 2013-01-26 00:44:19 UTC
mtraceur: Any chance to provide a screenshot?

Is there a schedule (when could this be retested)?

Not really -- we didn't hear any complaints about this during the international fundraiser that we just finished (but that could also be people not communicating it back up to us.)

I would vote to close this as resolved - works for me.

No other feedback, hence doing so.
