"Powered by Semantic MediaWiki" button

The current "Powered by Semantic MediaWiki" button is very ugly. It should be redesigned to be less ugly.
Comment 1 MWJames 2012-11-15 03:34:46 UTC
The design was provided by a volunteer and claiming that is "is very ugly" is a strong and assertive position that people might feel some discomfort with.

While judging design in its form is a matter of opinion, people are always welcome to contribute in a meaningful way. If you have a proposal about how to make it "less ugly", I think the community would welcome such effort but we should focus on language that will motivate people to moderate existing deficiencies instead of devaluing past accomplishments and contributions.

Proposal for SMW Logo

This looks somewhat similar to the MW logo.
Comment 3 d3mon 2012-12-04 19:57:08 UTC
I second the feeling that it's kind of...ummm...icky? I'll try to come up with something when I get a chance. I think a button similar to Nischay Nahata in the look of the MediaWiki button would be nice.

Powered by button

Figured this is something small I can contribute to the project. Designed it to mirror the MediaWiki/WikiMedia button to keep conformity. Let me know if you'd like to see any changes.
Comment 5 MWJames 2012-12-05 21:45:04 UTC
Thanks, nicely done. I'm not sure how we want to handle this logistically though.

Karsten? Should that be posted on the mailing list rather being here on bugzilla, so people can knock their heads off?

Thank you!

I am not sure if this is for the mailing list.

However, I also believe that there is a need for a less dominant "powered by" button which much better integrates into all sorts of skins and their local look and feel. In that respect I very much like d3mon's current proposal since it appears to me like a best of two worlds (MW and SMW).

For me the question is: Do we just provide this as an (official?) downloadable alternative on the logo page on smw.o or will we additionally deploy the alternative with SMW itself to save people the step of having to download it before replacing the official button.

This is something for the SMW project management (@Markus) to comment on.

I would highly recommend to also create SVG version.

psd file for button

Here is the Photoshop file if anyone one wants to modify, replicate, or do whatever to it. Same as png, but I did turn the text and flower opacity down in the photoshop file to make it blend a little more. Glad you guys like it.

Thank you very much, but Photoshop files are completely useless, please use SVG.

I previously added a link to bug 40465 because it would be nice to find a common solution to translate the logos (which might imply removing the linguistic items from the image itself) or remove the "powered by" completely.

Consistency with the MediaWiki button seems a good aim, but none of the attachment does this; perhaps you should start from the SVG version of the MediaWiki button.

Nothing is useless in terms of contribution that is coming from a volunteer. I find it utterly confusing that words such as "useless" are used in this thread where volunteers taken their free time to help this project.

> removing the linguistic items from the image itself) or remove the "powered by" completely.

As far as I understand (from the discussion of bug 40465), their is no immediate decision about a "clean solution" therefore any activity based on an assumption about how to go forward is overearly anticipative.

> perhaps you should start from the SVG version

d3mon did provide a PSD resource where when necessary can be used as basis for a SVG export. I don't think it is necessary for him/her to provide anything beyond that point because SMW does not require a SVG as basis for its deployment.

I find it utterly confusing that you don't seem to apply this rule to my comments.

You missed a couple words: "would be nice to", "might".

Perhaps you didn't read the sentence till the end: "start from the SVG version *of the MediaWiki button*", which surely would have some useful element to reuse. I don't know if one exists, though. <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poweredby_mediawiki_88x31.png>

Keyword "design" conflicts with "easy". Removing the latter.

Not in this case.
