Click on the watchlist from the menu.
Find a change and click the right arrow to view that change
Click the arrow icon in the top left corner and you get taken to the previous article

Expected:
Should be taken to the watchlist page (just like hardware back button does)

My inclination is to drop the "overlay" style for watchlist and its buddies; we don't need to use a software back button here when there's already a browser or hardware back, and it's tough to make something that behaves as expected on special pages.

Previously we showed search and the hamburger icon and it was suggested (I forget why to move to the overlay style for certain pages)

We have 2 choices
1) Go back to hamburger icon and search box
2) Simply remove the icon in the top left
3) Replace back icon with the hamburger

I suspect we will need a larger design discussion around this.

I've thrown away the back button from overlays
