Firefox 17.0.1 and Ubuntu 12.10; using the VE causes a failure with a "localStorage is null" error.

Sounds like a CE-issue (for the copy-and-paste code?).

We're going to resign (for now at least) from using localStorage for copy and paste. Although I was unable to reproduce this error, we're only using localStorage for copy and paste.
