Description Liangent 2012-12-14 11:18:43 UTC
On http://en.m.wikipedia.org, type the following search term:

* mw:
** sending me to http://www.m.mediawiki.org/wiki/ which hasn't been configured.
* wmf:
** sending me to http://wikimediafoundation.m.org./wiki/ which is not really a WMF domain.
* google:
** http://www.m.google.com/search?q= ok I know you're just adding "m." after the first part.

oohh.. that's an interesting feature of MediaWiki I had no idea existed.
Playing devils advocate do we have data on whether these are used frequently?

The google one seems bizarre and I'd be keen for us to remove that if there is not frequent use of it.

http://www.m.mediawiki.org/wiki/foo simply needs its www dropped
The wmf one is just weird...

I don't know about any data, but *yes* they are used very frequently. In fact, it's how [[mw:Git]] redirects properly from here to BZ.

Well, the google interwiki link is used, but I don't know how much it's used from the search bar.

Me wants real data.

I'd say if 1% of our users or less use it /from the Special:Search page/ then we should kill it.
Comment 4 Chad H. 2012-12-21 18:14:28 UTC
I don't see why we should kill a perfectly good feature from MediaWiki core just because MobileFrontend doesn't handle it properly.
Comment 5 Jon 2012-12-21 18:30:44 UTC
This is now off topic.
I'm just curious to whether it is indeed "a good feature". Typing google: in MediaWiki Special:Search input box just seems bizarre to me and unnecessary since the majority of search engine browser address handle this sort of behaviour.

Regardless it still needs to be fixed in MobileFrontend. However I'd say the urgency of the fix depends on how often this feature is actually used. Thus the request for some real data.

Typing google: in the bar may be useless and nobody tries it (but I don't know, that's really something we don't have numbers).

More generally though (about interwikis in the search bar), I do know that it is used extensively (once again, no numbers though).

I think the confusion here is stemming from the fact that (from Search and Interwiki's perspective) these are the exact same feature. See bug 15274 for some history.
