It works not since the refactored code uses User->getName(), which already sanitizes the IP address. The previous code did not do that, resulting in IPv6 addresses stored in lowercase in DB, but Contributions looking for them in uppercase. Since this is no longer an issue anyway, I'll abort the patch and close this ticket.
