Description Maryana Pinchuk 2012-12-28 18:18:14 UTC
Images that are added to articles on local wikis via the lead photo upload workflow do not appear to contain any edit summary, though other mobile edits are properly tagged and summaried. A few examples:

1. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ossipee,_North_Carolina&action=history (compare this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ossipee,_North_Carolina&diff=528851882&oldid=471244804 to the others that the user made via mobile)

2. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Suffa&diff=529429992&oldid=527168389

3. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Baylor_Massacre&diff=527902877&oldid=491809173

There should be an "Added image to article [Via Mobile]" edit summary.

[Via Mobile] is a hack that will die with https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/40340/
The edit summary itself will need to explain the action and that it's from mobile while the backend will make sure that it's marked as mobile internally.

The project around making all WMF properties automatically redirect to the mobile site got tabled around the Wiki Loves Monuments project. We were never 100% sure we'd be able to get around to commons given the timeline, and it is the last big remaining project that does not have automatic mobile redirection. Details of all this can be seen here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mobile_default_for_sister_projects
Ultimately, it was decided that more thought needs to be given to automatic redirection for commons due to the unique nature of its content, and it would potentially require making changes to MobileFrontend. This was de-prioritized relative to the other work on our plates aimed at reaching the team's goals by the end of this fiscal year. It's possible that this will come up again as something for us to tackle before the fiscal year is out, but this is still considered lower priority than the other work ahead.

[restoring previous prio]
Comment 5 Arthur Richards 2013-01-11 15:29:39 UTC
Maryana/Howie, Andre set the priority of this to high. Is that an accurate priority? Is this even a bug? It seems more like an enhancement to me since the photo upload feature hadn't previously been defined - nothing is broken, as far as I understand. Desired, nonexistent functionality should be added to https://mingle.corp.wikimedia.org/projects/mobile/cards/332, which currently says nothing about the edit summary.
Comment 6 Jon 2013-01-29 01:02:18 UTC
So there was a bit of confusion.
Edit summaries _are_ correctly added to uploads however they are not tagged as mobile edits.
The reason for this is uploads to Wikimedia Commons are made via CORS to the _desktop_ site of commons.

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/46479/ takes care of this by setting useformat=mobile in the upload so this should now be fixed.
