First, let me say that I think this feature is a bad idea. The lead is the most important part of the article and I see little need for making it collapsible. It is also not readily apparent in my opinion that an up arrow next to the header signifies collapsing the lead. At least with the other sections the content is already collapsed so it is easy to guess what the function of the button is. Finally, if we are going to have a lead collapse button, it should line up with the header. Right now it lies significantly below the baseline of the header, unlike the other collapse buttons which are nicely lined up with the middle of the other headers.
This was an experimentation in the beta and was removed a week ago due for deployment on Tuesday after collecting real data showing it was not used. The original motivation had been to provide a simple way to get access to "the table of contents"
