the logo to be i18nized

"Set $wgLogo to the URL path to your own logo image" message should be internationalized.

This message appears over the "MediaWiki" logo when the path is not set. The image is located at core\skins\common\images\wiki.png

I guess this one would have to follow the same solution as bug 40465 (when one is found).
Comment 2 Niklas Laxström 2013-01-06 20:43:10 UTC
With SVG it would be easy, except that we can't assume SVG support has been configured by default.

The hacky logo-plus-text should be replaced with a default logo and a sensible user interface for changing the logo...

Then where would you show the "text" part? or just open a dialog for uploading a new logo..when clicked on default logo.

I am trying to fix this, right now the default logo is 'wiki.png', so should the default logo be changed to 'mediawiki.png' and the message 'set $wgLogo ... ' be internationalised?
Comment 6 Nischay Nahata 2013-04-04 12:35:23 UTC
Almost right, the message should be i18n and it should appear over the logo.. I don't know if such css would be okay

I agree with Chad. Localising this text (or having the text there at all) is both unjustified and inappropriate.

Unjustified because documentation for this is already localised during the installer. So left are people installing manually, for which this is already documented in both the FAQ on MediaWiki.org and in LocalSettings.php

Inappropriate because many wikis (despite the message) do not have a dedicated logo. For the many wikis like these (I see this message a lot on random wikis I encounter), it would make sense that the default logo should be an image that is suitable for actual production use, and not some weirdo placeholder that is not meant to be served to actual traffic.

Setting it to the MediaWiki software logo (as proposed in change I9274fd895b0) doesn't seem right either as that will make wikis looks like being about MediaWiki by default (it's not like Bugzilla were most users are tech-savvy and understand that this is not the issue tracker of Bugzilla because there is a bugzilla logo in the top left corner of the page).

Perhaps we can come up with a neutral placeholder?

I think we should display the site name in there using some awesome and bigger font, but also take care that it doesn't overflow. The title is also displayed on the browser's tab and is supposed to be short

Perfect is the enemy of the good. You're blocking an improvement without good reason.

This is the MediaWiki logo: <https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/mediawiki/b/bc/Wiki.png>.

This is the proposed logo for new wikis that don't set their own custom logo: <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/skins/common/images/mediawiki.png>.

While they're similar, they're not the same. The sunflower is visually attractive and is _significantly_ better than <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/skins/common/images/wiki.png>.

I don't see the issue here. I think I9274fd895b0 should be un-abandoned and merged.
