jQuery's JSONP loading may not have a timeout, and doesn't give us clear feedback on whether the network is working.

* install app (now with appcache)
* turn on airplane mode
* load app
* wait while the spinner goes forever

Might want to ping a stub file on bits as on online check after a short timeout? Ick.
