Columns are currently declared in arbitrary order.

Why?  Are we doing select * then using numeric indices somewhere? :)

Well, our data layout is pretty denormalized -- the event tables, as a rule, have many columns in common -- so a consistent sort-order was applied it would make visually scanning multiple tables easier.
