Currently we do not populate date field if the image was taken with the camera in the app - this is because we are reading date info from MediaStore and not from EXIF. For JPEGs we should first try EXIF and then fall back to MediaStore.
Switch to Android component.
Example: I uploaded https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dahlia_garden_in_golden_gate_park_2.jpg and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dahlia_garden_in_golden_gate_park.jpg; the EXIF data is correct but {{information}} is populated with 31 December 1969. This seems like the same, or a similar, bug. However, I don't think I took these photos with the camera in-app but rather uploaded them afterwards.
As the Mobile Apps Team is focussing on the new, native Wikipedia app, the Commons app is no longer being maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation. I am WONTFIXing all open Commons app bugs to reflect that we will not be spending time fixing them.
