Description Raimond Spekking 2013-03-12 08:11:26 UTC
Per request of User:H-stt please close the unused list wikimedia-de-by-ltp. Thanks.

Hi Raimond - in terms of closing this list, do you want to maintain archives or do you want them also deleted? Do you want the list itself deleted or just closed (marked as emergency moderation and prepend a [CLOSED] phrase to the listinfo)?
Comment 2 Church of emacs 2013-03-12 12:36:30 UTC
Archives can be maintained, but the list should be read-only. We, the moderators, frequently get spam mails which do not go on the list but nevertheless have to be deleted manually.
That's not really worth the effort, considering that the list is not used any more and it's main purpose (organizing an event in 2012) has been fulfilled.

So if simply closing (as opposed to deleting) it stops the spam going to the mods/owners, then that's the preferred method :)

Die Mailingliste Wikimedia-de-by-ltp wird betrieben von tobias.klenze at wikimedia.de, olaf.kosinsky at wikimedia.de, h.schlottmann at gmx.net

<-- please mail the existing list admins above about this
Comment 4 Thehelpfulone 2013-04-09 21:11:19 UTC
Do you still have the list admin password? If so some settings changes that should fix this:

https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/wikimedia-de-by-ltp/?VARHELP=general/emergency - please set that to Yes.

https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/wikimedia-de-by-ltp/?VARHELP=privacy/sender/generic_nonmember_action - please set that to Discard.

https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/wikimedia-de-by-ltp/?VARHELP=privacy/sender/forward_auto_discards - set that to No.

https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/wikimedia-de-by-ltp/?VARHELP=general/description - please prepend [CLOSED] to the beginning of this field.

If the emails are being directly sent to the -owner email address, then I'd recommend removing your email addresses from the https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/wikimedia-de-by-ltp/?VARHELP=general/owner and https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/wikimedia-de-by-ltp/?VARHELP=general/moderator fields.
Comment 5 Thehelpfulone 2013-05-05 11:53:24 UTC
Raimond: please could you confirm if the above steps worked?
Comment 6 Church of emacs 2013-05-05 12:49:51 UTC
I've done everything above (except for removing myself from the list of owners, which I think is not a sufficient replacement for closing the list).

Regards, Tobias

[Assigning this to THO; please close the bug if necessary or either remove current list admins/take another action.]
Comment 8 Tomasz W. Kozlowski 2014-06-11 15:34:15 UTC
Assigning this to Giuseppe after a short discussion in #wikimedia-operations.
Comment 9 Giuseppe Lavagetto 2014-06-16 13:37:27 UTC
I deleted by error the list wikimedia-de-by, (almost same name, same admin) as I could not find wikimedia-de-by-ltp in the lists, so I got the name wrong, sorry.

I am trying to recover everything from backups, very sorry for the inconveninence
Comment 10 Giuseppe Lavagetto 2014-06-16 14:28:16 UTC
The recovery will likely take longer than expected, but I hope it will be available this evening.

If this is not acceptable for you, please let me know and I can kill some backup jobs - given the low traffic of the mailing list I assumed it would be good enough to have it back by this evening.

Apologies again for any inconvenience I may have caused.
Comment 11 Church of emacs 2014-06-16 16:13:13 UTC
Don't worry, mistakes happen ;-)
I let people know that the mailing list is "undergoing maintenance" on our group's wikipedia page. -- Tobias
Comment 12 Giuseppe Lavagetto 2014-06-16 20:57:58 UTC
Sorry again, it seems our backup system had a super-long queue, and it's well behind in its processing queue. Unfortunately, restore jobs do not have an higher priority than backup jobs at the moment, one thing we will fix, so it will take longer for the backup to restore.

According to my projections, I am confident I can take the mailing list back online tomorrow at about 12:00 UTC, hopefully much earlier.

I'll update the ticket as soon as possible.
Comment 13 Giuseppe Lavagetto 2014-06-17 07:49:12 UTC
Hi, good news!

The list should be back, I won't close the ticket until I get confirmation from you that everything's back to normal.

Thanks a lot for your patience

Giuseppe
Comment 14 Tomasz W. Kozlowski 2014-06-17 19:51:29 UTC
The list does indeed work for me.
