I would like to have an option to resize and crop the photo before uploading

Hello! Currently you could use any of the image editors from https://play.google.com/store/search?q=Image+Editor&c=apps&price=1 to edit the images before uploading. You can 'share to Commons' from most of the editors, so this should not be too bad. Cropping and rotate are essential features, that we'll probably add something in the future.

Duplicate of bug 37732? If this can be done server-side I'd prefer to not implement this also client-side.

No. bug 37732 is about an editor on the web interface, while this is on the mobile app interface. Completely different.

Switch to Android component.

Resolving as wont fix as we have no plans to implement image editing at this time.
